Am I spelling that right?
Oh well. Today, we finished learning about the West and then we watched a documentary about New York.
What you need to know is:
1. The West fueled Eastern industrialism by providing cheap raw materials and food. Without these, materials would have been too expensive and the workers would not have had enough to eat and would not have been able to work in factories.
2. The government’s policy towards Native Americans was to push them onto reservations and then assimilate them into American culture.
3. New York (and other cities in the northeast) exploded after the Civil War. A convergence of workers and immigrants, technology (trains, cheap steel, electricity), available resources (with the West opening up), and government spending on industry caused cities to be changed forever.
Cool.

Man, I am so unhelpful. Its 5:30 on Halloween and I still haven’t posted. Boo on me.
Anyway, we have SEVERAL things to talk about:
1. Schedule Switch-a-roo–Since your schedules are heavily weighted to have either me all in the morning or me all in the afternoon, Deily and I are going to switch your classes on Wednesdays. If you are in 7G, you now have me second period on Wednesdays. If you are in 7S, you now have me after lunch.
2. Last nights homework–Bloody Butchery of the British text and
The actual broadside–Sorry this did not get posted yesterday.
3. Tonight’s homework–General Gage’s version of events–Remember, you can EITHER write a paragraph about the differences between the two versions OR you can write a Venn Diagram describing their differences.
Good luck.

Sunday, October 29th, 2006
Ok, so, its late on sunday and I am posting now. Sorry.
First things first:
1. Quiz–You will need to answer word problems like the one we did for homework, and you will need to know what inflation is (and what can cause it) as well as what costs are and a few examples of them. IT IS NOT OPEN NOTE! I dont think it is going to be that hard, and your performance in class on Friday lets me know that most of you are ready for it. So, dont stress out TOO much.
2. Homework–in case you didnt write it down, you need to read Chapters 17 and 18 (and just in case I have that wrong, they are both chapters on Native Americans, both Sioux and Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. Write down the five main ideas of EACH of the chapters.
Ok, see you tomorrow.

Hey gang,
Today was an econ day. We went over the packet, which should be a lot of review for most students. The major things that students need to know are about what drives up business costs, supply and demand, and the basics of inflation.
Tonight’s homework is to answer the worksheet in the Econ Review packet and to make up three questions of your own. If you are having trouble with the questions, follow these steps:
1. Does it effect Supply or Demand?
2. How? Does it increase or decrease?
3. How will this theoretically change the price?
Good luck!

Tonight’s homework:
Paragraph question:
Should America have revolted, based on the information you have so far?
AND
Read “Paul Revere’s Ride” which can be found at http://www.paulreverehouse.org/ride/poem.shtml
and draw a picture of the scene. I would appreciate if the picture showed a few minutes worth of work and not just a stick figure on a lined piece of paper. You will not be graded for artistic talent, but effort is clear.
At this point, you should have the entire packet “Causes of Discontent” filled out, and you should understand how each of those items basically helped to cause the split between the colonies and England. If you do not, you need to see me.

Hey gang,
Unfortunately, if you have been waiting for me to post the homework, I am not going to. I do not have a PDF of it all. As always, don’t solely rely on the internet.
However, for those of you who have the worksheet but are confused:
1. Everyone should fill in the information for the French and Indian War.
2. For “Why was it important,” think about how it caused the American Revolution. (Hint: The Revolution was an eventual split between once close family members. The colonists were angry at Britain thinking it could tax the colonies whenever it wanted to (and other reasons), and the continued anger of the colonists eventually helped lead to the Revolution.)
3. You are only responsible for the two causes in your packet.

Hey gang,
Sorry this is late. I was watching “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” and boy, thats a long film.
Anyway, here are two recent documents:
Industrialization Syllabus
Econ Review
Also, your homework is to respond to the following question:
“How does technological innovation have both positive and negative effects?” Be sure to include information about society, your life, and the quality of products.
Have fun!

While we have no homework tonight, if you are reading this please remember how we plan on framing the unit:
“Does America have the right to revolt?”
The reason for this is because I would rather learn history as a series of choices that people made rather than a pre-determined storyline that happens no matter what. By questioning these choices, we can learn how to make choices for ourselves, and thats what history is all about.
Ok, I’ll stop ranting now. See you tomorrow.

Today we looked at different pieces of technology and tried to determine both positive and negative effects from each.
However, we did not get as far as I would have liked, and I cancelled the homework.
That just means we will have a double dose tomorrow…AWESOME!

Hey gang,
good luck on your test tomorrow. The only thing I can think that you might need is the Study Guide.
If you have any questions, I will be checking this more or less hourly, up until 11 pm. You can post comments here, and I will answer them here on the same comments list. I will not email you directly.
Good luck. Don’t forget to study the map (hint hint).

Tomorrow, your Diary Homeworkis due. You should focus on three different colonies, and you can write from the perspective of anyone alive during that time. Remember to include everything listed on the instructions. The one area that keeps dragging down people is not following instructions (especially on the quiz yesterday!)
Be sure to put todays class work (the five main ideas from chapter three) in your do now section.

So, I did not bring home my school computer tonight, so I will not be able to provide either a 7th grade homework worksheet OR an 8th grade study guide.
Yet another reason to not lose papers and to keep your notebook in order. Remember, this is meant to be a helper, not a substitute for organization.

No homework for tonight, and tomorrow you will have time to prep yourselves for the fishbowl. Groups will be assigned, questions asked, etc.
The most important thing you can do is make sure you have completed all the answers on the past four primary sources (F. Douglass, BT Washington, WEB DuBois, M. Garvey). They will be collected soon!
THERE IS ALSO A TEST ON FRIDAY! You will get a study guide tomorrow. The test is not long, and there is no essay.

So, for tonight, there is no homework to do. However, you do have an open-note Enlightenment quiz tomorrow, so make sure you have the notes printed. If you were absent, it is your responsibility to get the notes on your own time (not class time). I can help explain these notes, but I do not provide them for absent students unless otherwise stated on a case by case basis.

Monday, October 16th, 2006
1. Great job on your tests. Retakes (for those people who qualify) should be done sooner, rather than later.
2. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the HW for tonight, since I was unable to scan it and I printed it from a book.
3. The question, though, is “How is Ben Franklin representative of the Enlightenment in America? Focus on Science, Religion, and Freedom.” Write one lengthy paragraph. At least five sentences, can be longer.

Today was a Garvey day.
If you are confused about what he has to say, try to remember his background:
–He is Jamaican, and traveled around witnessing the oppression of peoples of African descent everywhere, including Africa.
–He is not just concerned with African-Americans, but all the peoples.
–He believes that things went wrong for Africans when Europeans intervened on the continent. Before that they built powerful empires and ruled themselves.
Here is a copy of the reading. Be sure to answer the question using at least three examples from the text.

Be sure to finish up the WEB DuBois worksheet questions for Monday, and then we will start Marcus Garvey. As I said before, I expect you to attempt the questions, but if you are confused about one or two points I will be happy to explain it.
Here is the DuBois Worksheet with the corrected question 3.

Saturday, October 14th, 2006
As saturday rolls around, I realized that I didnt post yesterday.
And you might have some questions about the Enlightenment Homework.
Try starting by thinking why one of these guys would want to form a government, or rather, what is their opinion on the purpose of government? Is it to protect and control? Is it to give students rights?
Then, try to design a student government. Who is in charge? Why? Will anyone else be in charge? What should the students who are not in the government do?
So, good luck. Remember: it should be at least 5 to 6 sentences, but you are welcome to make it longer.
It is due Monday. Also, there is a MAP QUIZ on Monday. You need to know all 13 colonies, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Charleston (SC), and Savannah (GA). This is not open note (because what would be the point of that?)

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006
Tonight, your homework is to do the Booker T. Washington worksheet. If you are having trouble understanding it, follow this strategy:
1. Read the questions first to know what to read for.
2. Then read the underlined parts, which are the most important.
3. If you are still not understanding it, remember the context that I gave you today. He is from Alabama, he is a former slave, and at the time he was seen as the greatest mind of his race. However, today, many revile what he was proposing. Also, the speech is called the Atlanta COMPROMISE, which means he was willing to give something up in order to get something in return.
It must be done by tomorrow despite the fact that I will be at the XC meet.

Sorry everyone, but we have been working off of a syllabus. This is because a few things are still uncertain. Just so you know, there will be a homework on the enlightenment due Monday which you will get on Friday, and the map quiz is also on Monday.
I will be at the Cross-Country meet tomorrow.

Today, we got things back, filled out a map (no pdf available as of now), and looked at colonial portraits as an introduction into what colonial people thought about.
Admittedly, this blog post is not exciting or useful.

Duuuudes…
Hey. Today, we discussed some things that may have seemed outside of the history curriculum. Mostly, labeling and stereotyping. The goal was to show that while the stereotyping and labeling we have been learning about during segregation was extreme, it was the byproduct of natural human reactions and behaviors. (Of course, just because they are natural, it does not make them desirable.)
Your only homework, despite what the syllabus says, is to complete that map. Think of it like a study guide for your map quiz on Friday.
I do not have a PDF of the map, so if you are missing it you may pick up another copy in class.

HOMEWORK NOTE: I had a bit of a “brain fart” when I printed out your homework, and the second question is poorly worded. What it should say is: “Describe how African Americans adapted to still be able to live their lives under segregation.”
Sorry for the confusion. Here is a copy of the Jim Crow handout.
Oh, if you are curious, we never got around to the map because of all your good questions, so that will have to wait until next week.
Today we discussed thePlessy v. Ferguson handout. I understand that many of you had trouble, which I knew would happen.
See y’all on Tuesday!

Hey gang,
Today, we had a Do Now that asked whether or not America had reached the Promise of the Declaration of Independence at the end of Reconstruction. Then we got a new syllabus. THEN we took some notes on segregation. Tomorrow, we will discuss the homework on the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court case and finish up talking about De Facto segregation. We will also be looking at images of lynching in America, which may be disturbing and which you are completely allowed to opt out of. After this, I will give you a handout and a map due on Tuesday. You will have class time to do these.

Today we took a little notes, answered a little questions…all in all a good time.
The notes attempted to cover the big ideas that could be pulled from the map. To show how nice I am, here are the “So What?” Notes and, what the heck, the Study Guide.

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006
Today, we:
1. Turned in our population maps and our commerce maps.
2. Then we turned in our Technology advertisements projects.
3. Then we did the Map and Technology Do Now.
4. Then we got a Study Guide for the test on Friday.
So, good luck on everything. Your homework from here to Friday is to work on the Study guide and prepare for the test. Get prepared. It will not be easy.
Also, as with every test, there will be a NOTEBOOK CHECK! Make sure you are organized. Most importantly, make sure your two Do Nows are in the Do Now section.
