Hey,

I forgot to post yesterday, so….sorry.

Today you should have turned in your Newspaper Project with the Research Organizers. If you did not, its one day late.

Those in the Research Enrichment group got the Expository Writing Guide. Don’t lose it! Put it in your notebooks. I don’t take kindly to binders without the guide come notebook check time.

Next, we started the Articles of Confederation Project. Remember to follow the rules of the Articles:
–You can’t tax!
–You can’t regulate trade!
–Money has to come from somewhere!
–You have very little power to enforce any rules because you have no money.
–Can’t make treaties with foreign countries but you can with Native Americans.

We will have more time to work on it tomorrow. For right now, though, work on your Take Home Test.

Hey 8th grade,

Sorry I havent been posting much recently.

1. Tomorrow is the map quiz. If you want a blank map to practice on, try typing in “US Outline Map” into a search engine.
2. We started the Progressive Power point Project today. Remember to use your Research Organizers!! Also remember to focus on the research question.
3. I totally forgot to post the Progressive Era Unit Syllabus.

1. You should have turned in yourRevolution chapters homework today.
2. If you have not done your powerpoint for me, make sure you come in at your scheduled time or reschedule a time.
3. Today we started the Newspaper Project. Its similar to the last project, since you will be using a research organizer. However, you will write a short newspaper article to show you understand what you researched. Be sure to follow the directions on the sheet.
4. Oh, and here are some Research Organizers for you in case you need an extra one.

The question, which should be completed after watching the second part, is “What conditions existed in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory that led to the fire?”

Your homework WAS going to be the Thomas Paine speech, but I decided to do that in class instead. (Your welcome.) Soooo, I guess you could do the Revolution chapters homework if you wanted, or watch TV or something.

“In the year 1877, the country was in the depths of the Depression. That summer, in the hot cities where poor families lived in cellars and drank infested water, the children became sick in large numbers. The New York Times wrote: “…already the cry of the dying children begins to be heard….Soon, to judge from the past, there will be a thousand deaths of infants per week in the city.” That first week in July, in Baltimore, where all liquid sewage ran through the streets, 139 babies died.
That year there came a series of tumultuous strikes by railroad workers in a dozen cities; they shook the nation as no labor conflict in its history had done.
It began with wage cuts on railroad after railroad, in tense situations of already low wages ($1.75 a day for brakemen working twelve hours), scheming and profiteering by the railroad companies, deaths and injuries among workers–loss of hands, feet, fingers, the crushing of men between cars.
At the B & O station in Martinsburg, West Virginia, workers determined to fight the wage cut went on strike, uncoupled the engines, ran them into the roundhouse, and announced no more trains would leave Martinsburg until the 10 percent cut was canceled. A crowd of support gathered, too many for the local police to disperse. B & O officials asked the governor for military protection, and he sent in the militia…

American Revolution

Today, we received a syllabus (American Rev. Syllabus), got back our notebook grades (which will be posted online soon), read through the Declaration of Independence to figure out what the heck Thomas Jefferson was complaining about, then tried to understand why Lincoln, MLK Jr., and Susan B. Anthony recognize this document as the “Promise of America.”

Your homework is the paragraph on the bottom of your syllabus. Prove to me that you know why the Declaration is called the promise of America. Its the basis for our class, so understanding it is necessary!

Hey gang,

Your homework isthe Great Upheaval Newspaper Project. It is due Thursday, but by tomorrow you should be have an understanding of the event and be ready to start working on the project.

Since it is copyrighted material, I do not want to post the sources. Therefore, get it from me in class. For anyone else who wants to know what they are (i.e. parents), they are pulled from Howard Zinn, Alan Pinkerton (of the Pinkerton Detective Agency), and Larry Gonick (Cartoon History of the United States).

Test Tomorrow

Today, we finished Thomas Paine, reviewed last minute information for the test, and began to look at the Declaration of Independence. 7S began a Do Now on its grievances, and 7G will get to that on Monday.

If you lost a Study Guide, there it is.

For your notebook check, you need 5 things in your Do Now section:
10/11 What are the reasons we have a government?
10/12 Roots movie–XC runners in 7G will not have this.
10/19 Why fight wars?
10/19 5 most important ideas from F + I War chapter
10/24 Did America have the right to revolt?

You also need the usual–organized notes, syllabi, etc.

Sorry gang, I will be out on Monday. My face has become unrecognizable, and a doctor’s appointment is in order.

We will not have the lesson that was planned (unfortunate, too…it was gonna be fun). Instead, its BOOK QUESTIONS! WOO!!! I knew you would be as excited as I am.

The good news is that I was going to make you read this information for an essay ANYWAY, so this gives you LESS work in the long run.

Riis
Happy Friday, y’all. I hope you are having or you have just had a great weekend. Today, in class, we did the Do Now from “The Devil in the White City,” which described all the changes cities were going through in the late 1800’s. Then we watched the actuality from Market St. in San Francisco. And Amy made fun of my face. Thanks, Amy.

For homework, you should work on the Jacob Riis outline. Now, its not due until Tuesday, but its better to start it early so that you can ask me questions if you get stuck. The main thing tripping up people is the thesis. A bad thesis is “Jacob Riis used tactics to show the conditions of the tenements.” What tactics? Why? Make an argument worth arguing! It doesn’t have to be “Jacob Riis was a good man…” but rather “Jacob Riis did __________ to show people _____________ so that they ________________.” That is a specific argument, and it opens you up for a good conclusion as well. For further help, USE THE EWG! (AKA the expository writing guide) There is an entire page on thesis writing.
