LOWELL MILLS PROJECT
![]()
When starting this project, all students should be at least six chapters into “Lyddie.” She is about to enter the industrial city of Lowell, MA, and work with other young girls at the textile mills. Lyddie made a desperate decision to save her family and her farm by raising enough money to pay off the debts at one of the few places that would hire a woman.
At the beginning of the 1800’s, Lowell was named East Chelmsford and boasted a population of less than 2,000. By the middle of the decade, the renamed Lowell was the second largest city in New England and one of the great industrial centers of America. The corporation owners made a fortune by making 1,000,000 yards of cloth per week, selling their product around the world.
This project will help you understand this fascinating transformation and how it is portrayed in Lyddie.
